Chronic Wasting Disease Hunter Awareness Project Update

Brandon Wildlife Association received funds from the Fish & Wildlife Enhancement Fund (FWEF) last year to raise hunter awareness about chronic wasting disease (CWD) in western Manitoba and asking hunters not to import unprocessed deer carcasses into Manitoba from Saskatchewan or Ontario.

I published a short article to notify Saskatchewan and Ontario hunters about CWD in the Regina, SK. Leader-Post and Kenora, ON. Miner newspapers in October and November 2022 (see attached notice).

With the help of the Fort-la Bosse Wildlife Association, I distributed over 300 CWD information brochures in October 2022 to 35 businesses in over 30 towns (for example, Moosomin, and Rocanville, SK and Melita and Cromer, MB) along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border (see attached map) to inform them about CWD and import restrictions.

To get new CWD hunter awareness signs installed near the MB/SK border for this fall (before hunting seasons), I obtained permission from the RM of Wallace-Woodworth to install the 2 signs (one facing west and one facing east) on an undeveloped road allowance near Highway # 1 for high visibility.

I have submitted the detailed application to Manitoba Transportation & Infrastructure (MI) to get a sign permit installation approval. In the meantime, I have spoken to some sign companies for quotes and will have a sign design ready in the next few weeks. Once we get the MI permit, I will arrange for the signs to be installed.

So far, so good. I’ll give the membership another update, this fall before deer season with a picture of the signs. Thanks.
